While working your way through college, your professors have likely talked to you about what you need to do in order to increase your chances of getting a job. For example, they may have discussed interviewing techniques with you and they may have even helped you learn more about how to create a resume. One area where many colleges fail, however, is in teaching students the type of job they should pursue.

When you are still a college student, you probably feel as if you would be happy to just get any job that comes your way. While you may be a bit limited in your choices if you have chosen a field with a great deal of competition, most professions have enough openings to allow you to be a bit more selective in your potential.

Another benefit to consider is whether or not the employer offers a retirement program. It is becoming less common to find employers that offer pensions, but it should at least provide you with 401K benefits. Be certain to compare the 401K programs being offered by each employer. Many employers will match the amount of money the employee places into the account, though the amount the employer matches will vary. For example, some employers may match you up to three percent while others may match as much as 10 percent or more. Since these matching programs are almost like receiving free money, you want to find the employer that will provide you with the greatest amount of money toward retirement.

As you consider the jobs that are available to you, there are several factors that you should consider. One of the main factors is the benefits package being offered by the job. Benefits include many things, such as health care insurance, dental insurance, eye insurance, low cost life insurance, and disability insurance. Ideally, the job you accept should provide you with five of these types of insurance coverage. In this way, you will be financially protected if something unexpected should occur. You may not realize it now, but just one medical problem down the road could leave you financially devastated. With an insurance plan in place, you can be certain that your future will not be destroyed if you become ill or are involved in an accident.

Profit sharing is another benefit that may be offered by your employer. With profit sharing, you will receive bonuses according to the performance of your company. Another benefit you might receive from an employer is a college reimbursement program. If you are working in a field that requires obtaining continuing education credits or if you work in a field where continuing your education can be very beneficial, finding an employer that will assist with paying for college can be very beneficial.

In addition to considering the benefits being offered to you, you should also consider where this job will take you in the future. Either the job should serve as a good jumping point for a better position or it should offer solid opportunities for advancement as well as opportunities to earn a higher income.
