The Benefits of Merchant Services

Being able to accept credit cards might not seem like a big deal for new business owners.  Confidence in their products, services, or uniqueness may make these entrepreneurs wary of laying out the money for merchant services.  However, any business that hopes to succeed must find a way to process credit card transactions.  With so many people refusing to carry cash, there is just no way around accepting credit cards like Master Card, Amex, and Visa.

Naturally, if some merchants are considered to be low risk, others are labeled high risk by merchant service providers who expect certain industries to face a higher frequency of charge backs.  Typically, this includes high volume mail order businesses, adult shops and services, and online stores, all of whom are unable to swipe their customers' cards directly.  As one might predict, high risk also means high rates.  However, offshore credit card processing allows these businesses to receive lower than usual transaction rates.  Online credit card processors like Paypal have similar benefits, especially for businesses which are just starting out and do not yet have a high volume of sales.

As luck would have it, credit card processing is typically broken down into two types.  The first classification is low risk, for merchants who have the ability to swipe their clients' credit cards in person.  The drawback for these merchants is the need to purchase or lease credit card processing equipment.  Card swipe machines are costly to purchase, and leasing fees can be high.  However, low risk merchants who require these tools are able to save money on merchant account services because they receive the lowest transaction rates in the industry.  Low merchant account rates are a great benefit for lower risk merchants like retailers, restaurants, bars, salons, grocery and convenience stores, handymen, and other in-person businesses.

Ultimately, all businesses enjoy one major benefit that goes along with the ability to accept credit cards now: they do not have to turn away customers who cannot pay by cash or check.  This makes for increased flexibility, more likelihood of profitable "impulse buys," and a more consumer-friendly environment for the business. Applying for a merchant account may seem tedious, but the benefits far outweigh the costs, no matter what a business is selling!
